Masticating fuels: fire behavior, effects & operational considerations

Learn the ins and outs of mastication fuel treatments on this field tour of Grangeville area sites with recent mastication treatments. Scientists and graduate students will draw on recent studies from Idaho and the Interior West to address a variety of topics including:

  • What is mastication? When and where is it useful?
  • Effects of mastication on fuels and fire hazard
  • Hands-on assessment of masticated fuelbeds
  • When masticated fuels burn: tree mortality, soil heating, shrub response
  • How masticated fuels change as they age
  • Operations: costs, machines, silviculture

Transportation in University of Idaho vehicles will be provided, but personal vehicles can also be used. Cost is $10 per field trip attendee.

This event is co-sponsored by the Northern Rockies Fire Science Network, Joint Fire Sciences Program, University of Idaho Extension, and University of Idaho Experimental Forest.
