In this seminar, I will highlight three key pieces of work culminating from my Fulbright post-doctoral research program. This work was designed to enable a globally collaborative approach to measuring fuel for fire behaviour models across the world. Overall, I will provide commentary on the importance of linking assessments of fuel structure with fuel conditions to gain a more complete understanding of fuels. I will discuss the benefits of adopting a universal set of attributes for describing the fuel complex, including the ability to share fuels and fire information globally, as a basis for developing a universal fire behaviour model and fire danger rating system. The interaction of climate change and fire presents a global challenge, therefore success in managing and learning to live with fire is also likely to found through global collaborations.
