Whitebark pine was recently federally listed as a threatened species. It is unique in that a multitude of published literature and on the ground experiences are readily available to apply to restoration actions for this species. Region 1 of the Forest Service is excited to host this 101 series and offer an opportunity for all involved with whitebark pine to have a shared understanding of the ecology and management approaches for restoration.

Critical to planning, designing, and implementing restoration actions is the understanding of successional dynamics in whitebark pine forests. There are varied paths of succession due to site, insects, disease, fire, and competitors. This webinar will cover the diverse pathways of succession in upper subalpine forests within the range of whitebark pine and provide the knowledge needed as a basis of ecosystem restoration. Restoration actions will be discussed in the context of successional dynamics and agency challenges.
