Tim Brown presented a webinar on the new National Climate Assessment (NCA). The NCA summarizes present day and future impacts of climate change on the United States. Observations are showing changes in temperature and precipitation patterns causing societal impacts outside of recent experience. Wildland fire examples include among others lengthening fire season, more extreme fire danger, and disturbances such as insect induced tree mortality and invasive species. Projections of future climate indicate a continued increasing trend of weather/climate extremes and impacts. While climate acts as an enabler, future fire will also be an outcome of political and societal resolve. This presentation provides an overview of the process and results for the new National Climate Assessment, and relate those findings to wildland fire, management and societal implications.
