In December 2022, twenty-one experts from land management agencies, Tribes, and organizations from across the country convened at the Wilderness and Fire Workshop in Gunnison, Colorado to consider the effects of over a century of fire exclusion on federal wilderness areas. In September 2023, the Center for Public Lands at Western Colorado University in collaboration with the Aldo Leopold Wilderness Research Institute, Rocky Mountain Research Station, published a synthesis paper to share the results of the workshop. The synthesis paper presents discussions of fire and wilderness experts, including the opportunities they identified to help overcome barriers to using prescribed fire in wilderness.
